For 500 years, scholars recognized Leonardo da Vinci as a quintessential Renaissance man: a man of reason. He was an Italian artist, sculptor, architect, inventor, designer, and anatomist. Now novelist Dan Brown has fictionalized da Vinci into a promoter of nonrational sexual mysticism. Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code has sold over 60 million copies. Brown's success demonstrates that the West has lost its confidence in reason, and is seeking escape into mysticism, drugs, and the occult. Mysticism was a part of pagan Europe. Dr. Vishal Mangalwadi explains that the West began to trust reason because theologians discovered that human intellect was made in God's rational image. We had to cultivate our minds in order to be godly. A biblical worldview inspired the church to educate the West. Now, having rejected the Bible, the West has lost its reason to trust reason.
