Product Description

In this lecture, Dr. Vishal Mangalwadi argues that democracy can and does result in brutal, militant, and oppressive governments. Palestine and Iran are recent examples, but the fascist regimes of Mussolini and Hitler also came to power through democratic elections. Dr. Mangalwadi studied political science at the University of Allahabad in northern India, and served at the national headquarters of two political parties organizing peasants and the lower castes. He explains that the American attempt to liberate Iraq became a quagmire, at least for a while, because the Sunnis have good reason to fear a Shi'ite majority. The tyranny of the majority can be infinitely worse than the tyranny of a despot. Dr. Mangalwadi traces the history of Western freedom to the 16th-century Scottish Reformation, which was based on the political theology of French Calvinist reformers known as the Huguenots. He points out that American universities have not only rejected the source of Western liberty, but many are teaching the very ideas that resulted in fascist totalitarianism in Germany.
